Battlefield 2 V1.5 Patch Details

Monday 1 December 2008 | Post a comment

DICE has released more details today about the upcoming Battlefield 2 v1.50 patch, set for beta release later this month. New security fixes are at the core of the update, including a way to prevent stat padding which has been a major problem over the past few months. Checkout some of the new fixes which are being planned for the patch.
"A few months ago we announced Battlefield 2 Update 1.50 was in development, but so far we have been quiet regarding the content of the update. It is time for us to reveal some of the features the update will contain! The priority for us in this update has been to secure Battlefield 2 against a number of attacks against the game.

We have spent time looking into the attacks and implemented short term solutions with the help of GameSpy to limit the impact of stats padding and leaderboard abuse. Other issues have been found to be game and server based, which is where Update 1.50 comes in. what Battlefield 2 1.50 will contain a number of security updates, including the following:

- Server crashing – We have worked with the issues causing servers to crash, which has caused problems for the community (especially those who rent ranked servers).

- Name/ID spoofing – Extra steps have been implemented to ensure the soldier being used belongs to the right account.

- Commander assets – This is to stop the excessive spawning of multiple crates, UAVs or vehicles.

More information on Update 1.50 will be revealed as we approach the release date! "

New Heroes Blog Interview

Friday 28 November 2008 | Post a comment

The Battlefield Heroes Official Blog has posted its first of several interviews set to be released in the coming weeks. The inaugural interview features Battlefield Heroes artist / developer, Dawid Mod. The interview focuses on Mod's personal preferences, rather than revealing new Heroes details, but it's still a good read. Checkout a snippet below, or Read The Full Interview Here.
"Who are you?
Hey, my name is Dawid Mod

Where are you from?

I’m from Sweden. I grew up in a village called Sävar, about 650km north of Stockholm.
A lot of my time as a teenager was dedicated to art. I often sat in my room making crazy drawings or doing paintings.
In high school and two years after high school I studied art and art history. It wasn’t until university that I discovered the sweet taste of computer graphics and 3D.
I spent a year at the University of Luleå in Skellefteå learning 3D.
This was in 2000 - 2001. The year after, May 2002, I began my career here at DICE.

What do you do on heroes?
I’m an artist creating vehicles, weapons and level art.
Also, I’m working with our talented outsourcing artists, giving them feedback on their work.

What’s your favorite heroes aspect?
I love to dress up my little heroes. Nothing girly about that, at all. It´s just so much fun either to make them look really, really cool or really stupid.
I’m also a fly-boy. I love to sweep over the battlefield, select a target and take them out with my left wing, ahhhhh."

Bad Company Sequel Announced

Thursday 23 October 2008 | Post a comment

In a new interview with Variety, EA head Frank Gibeau stated they have a sequel planned for Battlefield: Bad Company. While no details on the game were released, hopefully the sequel will feature some improvements to the multiplayer arena. For more on this topic and everything going on at EA, checkout the Full Variety Interview.
"Gibeau says there is a "sequel idea planned" for "Army of Two" and also for "Battlefield: Bad Company." Which is as close to saying there will indeed be an "Army of Two 2" ("Army of Three?" "Army of Two Squared?") and "Bad Company 2" as we'll probably get until the sequels are officially announced."

First Strike Mod Progress

Monday 20 October 2008 | Post a comment

The First Strike mod team has posted a new progress update, including some screenshots from the latest round of beta tests. It's a pretty long post, but you can read the rest of the update at the First Strike Website.
" The First Strike BETA has been over for a while, and we here at First Strike would like to give you a brief look at the progress that has occured since then as well as a thank you to all who participated over the course of the weekend-long test. We highly appreciate those who turned out to assist us in our effort to make First Strike as good as possible, and the weekend was very productive, and a big success in general. We learned many things during in-game sessions, and from post-testing feedback, that has helped us improve the mod. Some of the fixes you may have even seen during the course of the Beta via our all new First Strike Launcher system, created by yours truly.

So to begin, I'll explain when you can expect to see these maps. Currently, after a lot of internal discussion, it has been decided that patch 1.35 (Coming Soon™) will consist of 2 to 3 new maps. The maps that are being considered for this release are Null Sensor Station (Formerly Strike at Bimmiel), Refinery, and Lok Wastelands. These maps have all been developed either by First Strike community members or, in the case of Lok, team members on leave. This provides us the unique ability to be able to test and refine these maps while our primary development time still goes towards the Battle of Hoth. Hopefully, if all goes well, not long after the 1.35 release we'll be able to get you 1.4 with Hoth and more."

Google Entering Battlefield Heroes?

Thursday 9 October 2008 | Post a comment

Recently, Google had made an announcement they were planning on taking Adsense, their popular advertising program, into the gaming worlds; similar to in-game ads placed in Counter-Strike and Battlefield 2142.

Adding to the discussion on Google in-game advertising, Alt + F4 has posted a very interesting article discussing how this new service may make its way into Battlefield Heroes. While nothing has been confirmed by DICE or EA, the article raises some interesting points.
"In their AdSense blog, Google announced their entry into the field of ad supported games. Keep in mind this is really Google ads that you see everywhere (including this site) put into web-based games. This doesn't mean that Google ads are going to start showing up in Battlefield: Bad Company but it certainly does raise some real possibilities that it could show up in the unreleased Battlefield: Heroes game.

Why can it show in one but not the other? Simple, until the Xbox 360 gets a browser, text-based or clickable ads just won't work. On PCs this is of course not the case."

Battlegroup 42 Media Release

Tuesday 7 October 2008 | Post a comment

The Battlegroup 42 Mod team has released some new renders today. Check them out, along with the full news post, below.
"Hi, Battlegroup42 fans ! Yes, it´s time again for news about our modification because the release of our new version 1.5 is getting closer, and we still have a lot of new content we haven´t shown you yet. Like we already promised you in our last news we will concentrate on the ground forces this time.

Let us visit the British tank barracks first and reveal a whole series of brand new models. Our modeler Nimrod6 presents his skills with four variants of the Crusader tank, showing what still can be achieved with the good old BF1942 engine. His models don´t need to fear a comparison with ones from newer games. Our renders as well as the ingame screenshots give impressive proof of that. The Crusader tank family was coded by Sarge31FR."

New Bad Company Interview

Wednesday 1 October 2008 | Post a comment

This week our friends over at Planet Battlefield received the opportunity to interview DICE Producer, Gordon Van Dyke about the upcoming content update for Battlefield: Bad Company. Many of the questions asked came directly from the Battlefield community and fans just like yourself.
"PBF: Will there be additional ways to take down enemy helicopters or will more AA be added to current maps?

Gordon: Helicopters are very susceptible to 50 cal fire from the stationary 50 cal, the tank’s secondary gunner position and from the support kit. If it gets in close enough it’s pretty devastating. On the maps that have the helicopters in them, Par for the Course and Crossing Over, there is defiantly an ample amount of AA as well.

PBF: Many Playstation 3 players are still having VoIP issues. What is the current status on a fix for this?

Gordon: We are working really hard at finding the exact reason for it. It has been quite elusive. The basic structure is virtually identical with the Xbox 360, so we are looking into what is causing it. It is turning out to be quite difficult, but it is a high priority and it is being taken very seriously. We also partnered up with Sony to pull from their experience and expertise on this as well."

BF Heroes Blog: Your Questions Please

Wednesday 1 October 2008 | Post a comment

The latest Battlefield Heroes Blog entry invites Heroes fans to ask developers any questions they may have concerning the game. For details check out the full post below.
"If you have a question about Battlefield Heroes you might get an answer here!

Here is how it will work:
At an announced time(very soon, NOT today) we will publish a news item asking you for your feedback.
In this news item anyone will be able to ask a question about Battlefield Heroes.

After a certain amount of comments we will turn commenting off, then we will read what you have provided and see if we find any questions we can answer already.

We will do this once in the morning and once in the evening, so people in virtually every time zone will have the chance to participate.

If we find enough questions, we will select a couple and make them into a poll.

Soon after closing the comments and gathering questions we will create that poll and leave it open for 24 hours, giving everyone the chance to cast a vote for their favourite question.

And after all is said and done we will add the “winning” question to our FAQs."

BF Heroes Blog: Upgrading The Site

Thursday 25 September 2008 | Post a comment

In a new Battlefield Heroes Blog post today, Global Community Manager, Goodman announced plans to upgrade the Battlefield Heroes Website. The upgrades will be aimed at improving responsiveness for users and increasing the site's ability to handle web traffic.
"We thought you would like to know that we have been planning to upgrade our site for some time now.

As our more regular visitors may have noticed previously, whenever we start a contest to give out Beta keys the site gets somewhat unresponsive. Soon this will be no more.

Whereas the look and feel of the site will not drastically change, the backend (all the bits you don’t see, just "feel" when things slow down) should drastically improve.

Apart from making all of us, here at DICE, very happy this will also have an additional benefit for everyone:
Once we have finished this upgrade we will once again be able to run regular Battlefield Heroes Beta key contests

Please keep in mind:
Responding to this news will not get you a Beta key but, responding in an intelligent and coherent manner will earn you the respect of every reader."

Bad Company News Letter

Tuesday 23 September 2008 | Post a comment

A little behind on the news, but here is the September 19th Battlefield: Bad Company newsletter. For more head on over to the Battlefield Blog.
"Good day Soldiers,

With the upcoming release of “Acta Non Verba” and “Par for the Course” multiplayer maps selected by the community, we’d also like to share information on what the additional maps selected by the Battlefield: Bad Company team here at DICE are. Drum roll please…… the winners are “Ghost Town” and “Crossing Over”. These were the additional maps that we felt would be the best for Conquest mode and coincidentally the 3rd and 4th most popular maps from community voting - great minds think alike! The team is really looking forward to sharing these new Conquest Maps with you for free this October.

More news about the update; we have not stopped looking into the VoIP issue on PS3. We are working hard here at DICE and with our partners at Sony to help improve and fix the PS3 VoIP issue. We have also seen some questions about our awards, especially the Savior Trophy and Staying Dry Wild Card. The Savior Trophy has been adjusted to be more achievable and the Staying Dry Wild Card has had its description corrected in the menu. After the update, it will read “Get 50 road kills with the boat in multiplayer”. A news announcement with a full list of fixes and changes that have been included in this update will be released in the near future.

Award Tip: To achieve the Top Squad Wild Card you must earn the Best Squad Trophy in all Gold Rush maps and 10 Squad points. Squad points can be earned by either repairing friendlies’ vehicles (10 points), healing a friendly (10 points), or being a savior of a friendly soldier (15 points)."

Heroes Blog Update

Thursday 11 September 2008 | Post a comment

More commentary on Battlefield Heroes today, as designer David Telenius and Global Virtual Item Store Manager Mayu Polo-Wieja discuss character customizations, point capturing, and missions in an all new Heroes Blog Post. Checkout a snippet from the post below.
"Customization items include everything you can obtain from the game store: weapons, clothes and emotes. You will also be able to obtain other items, including: abilities, missions, and convenience items.

You use weapons and abilities to take out your opponents while wearing cool outfits and mocking them with your taunting emotes. Missions let you show off really how good you are. You will be able to choose from a wide range of missions and you can take up to 3 missions into the game with you to try to complete them and gain the reward, which can be Valor Points (see below), customization items or Hero Points (see below). Convenience items are there to make your life as a Hero easier as well as to offer certain optional services. This can be everything from gaining experience faster to changing the name of your Hero."

DICE has announced that Battlefield: Bad Company will be receiving four brand new conquest maps, all of which will be converted from single player levels. Two of the new maps will be chosen by DICE developers, while the other two will be chosen by Battlefield: Bad Company players who can vote for which levels they want converted. "Starting today we open up the possibility to vote to determine which two single player levels will be turned into unique maps for the multiplayer Conquest mode.

Starting today we open up the possibility to vote to determine which two single player levels will be turned into unique maps for the multiplayer Conquest mode. This vote gives players the chance to revisit popular locations from the single player campaign, such as the golf course in Par For the Course, now in an intense multiplayer match. The two maps with the most votes by Tuesday, September 2nd will win. In addition, the Bad Company team at DICE will also choose an additional two maps for the Conquest mode. That makes FOUR new maps available to download for free this fall."

Bad Company Conquest Q&A

Friday 29 August 2008 | Post a comment

There has been a new Q&A with conquest producer DICE Producer, Gordon van Dyke, on the Battlefield: Bad Company Blog.
"What does a good Conquest map look like in your opinion?

A good Conquest map caters to the type of map you want to make. Is it Infantry focused, make it in a tight quarters with lots of objects to hide around and Flags that are closer with little to no vehicles. Is it more Vehicle focused, make it in a more open area with less objects to obstruct your vehicle movements. On top of that a Conquest map must be open for multiple strategies. The map should evolve and allow for new strategies as players become accustomed to the map. If the map is too streamlined it will quickly become boring as every session played becomes a re-run of the previous session."

Battlefield Heroes Gets Benchmarked

Thursday 28 August 2008 | Post a comment

Like many other gamers, you may be wondering just how Battlefield Heroes will perform on your system come release day. AMD Zone recently took the game for a test run and revealed some interesting benchmarks.
"Battlefield has been one of the biggest gaming franchises of the decade with numerous sequels and incarnations of the game, most recently on the consoles with Bad Company. The latest version for PC Gamers is Battlefield Heroes which is a new take on the game franchise which brings it into the world of web gaming and also simplifies the gameplay significantly to try and cater to casual gamers. The game is currently still in beta testing phase but we were able to get hold of a key and we decided to test the game to see how exactly it performs."

"GC `08 is now over; we had a great time and definitely have some fond memories.

Hopefully everyone who visited enjoyed it and had time to try out Battlefield Heroes.

Not only was the community feedback very good, it was also great to have the opportunity to meet some of you personally.

In addition to articles, galleries and videos from the EA-CT.de team (without whom we couldn’t have pulled this off. A huge thanks to them and all the folks over at EA Germany!), you will find some pictures in our Community Heroes section."

Dice States Heroes "Already Out"

Monday 25 August 2008 | Post a comment

Although Battlefield Heroes remains in beta testing, in a recent interview with Game Industry, Ben Cousins acknowledged that the game is pretty much "already out". The DICE producer stated that while it has not been released to the public yet, the fact that so many people have already played it means that the game has pretty much become available to all.
"You may have seen that there was an announcement that the game was delayed - John Riccitiello mentioned that in the recent earnings call. What's interesting is that we never announced a date, we talked about the game being released in the summer of this year and that's still the case. Actually, we're in the closed beta already, so the game is already out and you can't delay a game that's already been released and already been played by people.

It's an interesting difference between a packaged goods product, like our previous Battlefield games, in that there is no real kind of big splash release date where suddenly it's available - it kind of builds up over time. We're in that closed beta phase at the moment and we're going to be adding, as I mentioned earlier, a significant number of users within the closed beta phase itself. The game will kind of sneak out and before you know it, it will be a fairly big...game even though we're in the closed beta and we're not 'released'."

The Business Side Of The Battlefield

Thursday 14 August 2008 | Post a comment

As development of Battlefield Heroes continues, many have already begun to speculate on what the overall impact of the United States' first major play for free game they will. The latest to join in the discussion is Forbes Magazine, who decided to take an in depth look into the business side for this game, and future of play for free.
"Ben Cousins, executive producer for the "Battlefield" franchise, says the interest in the title has been overwhelming. A cartoony take on what has traditionally been a gritty shooter, "Heroes" focuses solely on the multiplayer matches that have made the franchise so popular. When the studio announced a contest for invites to the game, the site received some 8,000 posts in two days that ultimately crashed the "Heroes" site server. Currently, the "Heroes" site has 170,000 registered users and a quarter million page views a day.

As a free game, "Heroes" will tap into banner advertising and sales of virtual goods, such as helmets, parrots and guns, for its revenue. EA declined to share its financial expectations for the game, but Cousins says that as long as 5% of players are spending money (which in other titles works out to $10 to $15 a month per player), it'll keep the service going. New Ben Cousins Interview

Thursday 14 August 2008 | Post a comment

Gamespot recently got a chance to sit down with the infamous Ben Cousins, the lead producer for Battlefield Heroes. In the interview, Cousins revealed, among other themes, that nearly 10,000 players have joined the beta and clocked in over 16,000 hours of game play time. Head on over to Gamespot to get the full interview.
"GS: This microtransactions model hasn't taken root yet in the West. What do you look at in terms of successful predecessors for the microtransactions model in the US? Yohoho Puzzle Pirates? Acclaim's games?

BC: MapleStory is doing really well, and Puzzle Pirates is also doing well. I've been going to a microtransactions roundtable at each Game Developers Conference over the last few years, and there used to be maybe a few guys operating small businesses, small-scale role-playing games and that kind of thing. When I went this year, it was clear there were a large number of [successful developers].

I think it's interesting Heroes is the first microtransactions-based game from a major publisher. So we appear to be breaking the ice and doing something cutting-edge, but there's a good precedent in the West for reasonable success for a smaller-scale business. There's an audience there and a demand for this sort of game, and we think we can bust it open with Heroes with a higher profile and the higher-quality game we're offering."

Bad Company Conquest Mode Released

Saturday 9 August 2008 | Post a comment

EA has released the conquest mode for Battlefield: Bad Company this week. The mode is available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace and the Playstation 3 Network, weighing approximately 80 MB. Here is the full press release.
"A brand new multiplayer mode is here, and it's free!

Content includes the traditional Battlefield multiplayer game mode, Conquest. Conquest focuses on the capture and control of flags; once a team captures a control point, its members can re-spawn in the area. When a team loses control of all their flags or control points, they cannot re-spawn.

Maintaining control over the flags on the battlefield is a key to victory and the ability to re-spawn troops close to the battlefront can make all the difference for that last offensive push. Four existing maps have been redesigned along with all new lighting and weather effects, to give players a great battlefield on which to play Conquest. Upon entering one of these maps, the U.S. ARMY will face off against either the Russian or Middle Eastern Coalition forces and the battle for control of the territory will begin.

Don't have a copy of BF:Bad Ccompany yet? Better go out and get one now!

See you on the Battlefield! "
