Friday 29 August 2008 | Post a comment

DICE has announced that Battlefield: Bad Company will be receiving four brand new conquest maps, all of which will be converted from single player levels. Two of the new maps will be chosen by DICE developers, while the other two will be chosen by Battlefield: Bad Company players who can vote for which levels they want converted. If you want your voice heard, be sure to Vote At The Bad Company Website.
"Starting today we open up the possibility to vote to determine which two single player levels will be turned into unique maps for the multiplayer Conquest mode.

Starting today we open up the possibility to vote to determine which two single player levels will be turned into unique maps for the multiplayer Conquest mode. This vote gives players the chance to revisit popular locations from the single player campaign, such as the golf course in Par For the Course, now in an intense multiplayer match. The two maps with the most votes by Tuesday, September 2nd will win. In addition, the Bad Company team at DICE will also choose an additional two maps for the Conquest mode. That makes FOUR new maps available to download for free this fall."

Bad Company Conquest Q&A

Friday 29 August 2008 | Post a comment

There has been a new Q&A with conquest producer DICE Producer, Gordon van Dyke, on the Battlefield: Bad Company Blog.
"What does a good Conquest map look like in your opinion?

A good Conquest map caters to the type of map you want to make. Is it Infantry focused, make it in a tight quarters with lots of objects to hide around and Flags that are closer with little to no vehicles. Is it more Vehicle focused, make it in a more open area with less objects to obstruct your vehicle movements. On top of that a Conquest map must be open for multiple strategies. The map should evolve and allow for new strategies as players become accustomed to the map. If the map is too streamlined it will quickly become boring as every session played becomes a re-run of the previous session."

Battlefield Heroes Gets Benchmarked

Thursday 28 August 2008 | Post a comment

Like many other gamers, you may be wondering just how Battlefield Heroes will perform on your system come release day. AMD Zone recently took the game for a test run and revealed some interesting benchmarks.
"Battlefield has been one of the biggest gaming franchises of the decade with numerous sequels and incarnations of the game, most recently on the consoles with Bad Company. The latest version for PC Gamers is Battlefield Heroes which is a new take on the game franchise which brings it into the world of web gaming and also simplifies the gameplay significantly to try and cater to casual gamers. The game is currently still in beta testing phase but we were able to get hold of a key and we decided to test the game to see how exactly it performs."

"GC `08 is now over; we had a great time and definitely have some fond memories.

Hopefully everyone who visited enjoyed it and had time to try out Battlefield Heroes.

Not only was the community feedback very good, it was also great to have the opportunity to meet some of you personally.

In addition to articles, galleries and videos from the EA-CT.de team (without whom we couldn’t have pulled this off. A huge thanks to them and all the folks over at EA Germany!), you will find some pictures in our Community Heroes section."

Dice States Heroes "Already Out"

Monday 25 August 2008 | Post a comment

Although Battlefield Heroes remains in beta testing, in a recent interview with Game Industry, Ben Cousins acknowledged that the game is pretty much "already out". The DICE producer stated that while it has not been released to the public yet, the fact that so many people have already played it means that the game has pretty much become available to all.
"You may have seen that there was an announcement that the game was delayed - John Riccitiello mentioned that in the recent earnings call. What's interesting is that we never announced a date, we talked about the game being released in the summer of this year and that's still the case. Actually, we're in the closed beta already, so the game is already out and you can't delay a game that's already been released and already been played by people.

It's an interesting difference between a packaged goods product, like our previous Battlefield games, in that there is no real kind of big splash release date where suddenly it's available - it kind of builds up over time. We're in that closed beta phase at the moment and we're going to be adding, as I mentioned earlier, a significant number of users within the closed beta phase itself. The game will kind of sneak out and before you know it, it will be a fairly big...game even though we're in the closed beta and we're not 'released'."

The Business Side Of The Battlefield

Thursday 14 August 2008 | Post a comment

As development of Battlefield Heroes continues, many have already begun to speculate on what the overall impact of the United States' first major play for free game they will. The latest to join in the discussion is Forbes Magazine, who decided to take an in depth look into the business side for this game, and future of play for free.
"Ben Cousins, executive producer for the "Battlefield" franchise, says the interest in the title has been overwhelming. A cartoony take on what has traditionally been a gritty shooter, "Heroes" focuses solely on the multiplayer matches that have made the franchise so popular. When the studio announced a contest for invites to the game, the site received some 8,000 posts in two days that ultimately crashed the "Heroes" site server. Currently, the "Heroes" site has 170,000 registered users and a quarter million page views a day.

As a free game, "Heroes" will tap into banner advertising and sales of virtual goods, such as helmets, parrots and guns, for its revenue. EA declined to share its financial expectations for the game, but Cousins says that as long as 5% of players are spending money (which in other titles works out to $10 to $15 a month per player), it'll keep the service going. New Ben Cousins Interview

Thursday 14 August 2008 | Post a comment

Gamespot recently got a chance to sit down with the infamous Ben Cousins, the lead producer for Battlefield Heroes. In the interview, Cousins revealed, among other themes, that nearly 10,000 players have joined the beta and clocked in over 16,000 hours of game play time. Head on over to Gamespot to get the full interview.
"GS: This microtransactions model hasn't taken root yet in the West. What do you look at in terms of successful predecessors for the microtransactions model in the US? Yohoho Puzzle Pirates? Acclaim's games?

BC: MapleStory is doing really well, and Puzzle Pirates is also doing well. I've been going to a microtransactions roundtable at each Game Developers Conference over the last few years, and there used to be maybe a few guys operating small businesses, small-scale role-playing games and that kind of thing. When I went this year, it was clear there were a large number of [successful developers].

I think it's interesting Heroes is the first microtransactions-based game from a major publisher. So we appear to be breaking the ice and doing something cutting-edge, but there's a good precedent in the West for reasonable success for a smaller-scale business. There's an audience there and a demand for this sort of game, and we think we can bust it open with Heroes with a higher profile and the higher-quality game we're offering."

Bad Company Conquest Mode Released

Saturday 9 August 2008 | Post a comment

EA has released the conquest mode for Battlefield: Bad Company this week. The mode is available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace and the Playstation 3 Network, weighing approximately 80 MB. Here is the full press release.
"A brand new multiplayer mode is here, and it's free!

Content includes the traditional Battlefield multiplayer game mode, Conquest. Conquest focuses on the capture and control of flags; once a team captures a control point, its members can re-spawn in the area. When a team loses control of all their flags or control points, they cannot re-spawn.

Maintaining control over the flags on the battlefield is a key to victory and the ability to re-spawn troops close to the battlefront can make all the difference for that last offensive push. Four existing maps have been redesigned along with all new lighting and weather effects, to give players a great battlefield on which to play Conquest. Upon entering one of these maps, the U.S. ARMY will face off against either the Russian or Middle Eastern Coalition forces and the battle for control of the territory will begin.

Don't have a copy of BF:Bad Ccompany yet? Better go out and get one now!

See you on the Battlefield! "

Heroes Blog: "Well We Didn't Expect This"

Monday 4 August 2008 | Post a comment

The words "Well we didn't expect this" rang especially true for Battlefield Heroes techs this morning, as a large amount of traffic knocked the official website offline for several hours. With the release of new beta keys over the weekend, the increased number of players coming to download the game overwhelmed the Battlefield Heroes servers and actually managed to crash the site for a brief period of time this morning. According to the Battlefield Blog, everything is back up and running now, and the techs are looking into the issue to avoid a repeat of the chaos in the future.
"Turns out there were so many people waiting to win a Beta key that the server basically...up and croaked.

Talk about things going horribly right.

We'll be doing some maintenance over the next day or two; we want to make sure that the site can handle all you Battlfield Heroes enthusiasts.

Apologies for the delay, but don't worry, we'll be back!"

New Heroes Beta Keys Up For Grabs

Thursday 31 July 2008 | Post a comment

With the Battlefield Heroes closed beta in full swing, DICE has decided to put new beta keys up for grabs. Simply by commenting on upcoming news stories posted on the official blog, you can earn yourself a free preview of the game. For all the details on the contest, check out the post below, or head on over to the Battlefield Heroes Blog.
"Since there were a couple of disappointed comments to our recent news of delay (very glad to see so many people are looking forward to our game), we've decided to give away some extra Beta keys.

Starting next week and ongoing for 4 weeks, we'll be posting a news item twice a week, at a random time.

Why is this so special, you might ask.

Well, here's the thing:
the first 20 people to comment will get a Beta key sent to them within a couple of days.

A cool side effect of this is that those people will then be able to enter our weekend Beta key contest and win even MORE keys to give out to friends.

Please keep in mind that once you win a key you cannot enter again. Let's give everyone a fair chance."

Heroes Release Delayed Until Late 2008

Thursday 31 July 2008 | Post a comment

During an investor conference on Tuesday, EA CEO John Riccitiello released news that Battlefield Heroes would be delayed till the end of this year. While no new release date was confirmed, the title will not be meeting its original summer of 2008 release date.
"EA DICE's upcoming free-to-play PC shooter Battlefield Heroes has been delayed and is now expected to arrive late this year, publisher Electronic Arts announced today.

The ad-supported, web-based shooter was previously expected to launch this summer. During a conference call today, EA CEO John Riccitiello revealed that the game is now "launching at the end of the calendar year."

"We decided to increase its focus on some of the social networking features," Riccitiello noted, stressing that the studio hopes to incorporate beta tester feedback and implement new features. "The last thing we want to do is jab it in the marketplace."

Riccitiello seemed optimistic about the title's development despite the delay, adding that Battlefield Heroes "still feels like it's progressing much like we anticipated.""
There has also been a new post on the Battlefield Heroes Blog which addresses the release date being pushed back. The post confirms the delay, but also reassures players that the Heroes closed beta has gone into full swing and the next phase will be opening up very soon.
"As you may have heard, the official release of Battlefield Heroes has been delayed until later this year.

Have no fear soldiers, we're moving into the next beta phase very soon and we will be offering a LOT more beta keys over the next few months.

Stay tuned for more details.

We have also started weekly weekend tournaments. Current Beta testers get to compete and win extra Beta keys to give out to friends!
